Svanibor Pettan

He received his B.A. degree in musicology in 1983 from the University of Zagreb, M.A. in musicology in 1988 from the University of Ljubljana, and Ph.D. in ethnomusicology in 1992 from the University of Maryland. These three studies are based on fieldwork in Zanzibar, Egypt, and Kosovo respectively; he also conducted research in the territories of former Yugoslavia, Norway, Australia, and USA.

Dr. Pettan held a research position at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research in Zagreb for ten years and from 1995 holds regular teaching positions at the University of Ljubljana: until 2003 at the Music Academy, from 2003 on at the Faculty of Arts' Department of Musicology and Department of Ethnology and cultural anthropology. He also teaches at the universities in Maribor and Zagreb and has intense international schedules (conferences, guest lectures).

His posts include membership in the executive boards of the International Council for Traditional Music and the Cultural Society Folk Slovenia, and membership in several international editorial boards (e.g. Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World, Ethnomusicology Forum, Narodna umjetnost, Traditiones, The World of Music). The prevalent themes in his studies include music in the contexts of politics and war, multiculturalism and music of minorities, and theory and practice of applied ethnomusicology. Among his recent projects is a tetralogy dedicated to Rom (Gypsy) musicians in Kosovo (book, picture exhibition, film, CD-ROM).

His specialties include Balkan Gypsy music, multicultural music education, and music in relation to politics, war and exile, as seen in his writings published in Austria, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden, and USA.

He is Asst. Professor at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research in Zagreb, and at the Music Academy of the University in Ljubljana.
